Nozzle Cleaning Mig Weld Spatter is an unavoidable production problem that can be reduced but not completely eliminated.
Molten droplets of metal from the weld arc can attach to any metal surface. These droplets can build up on the contact tip and in the gas nozzle of the torch, and will eventually reduce or deflect the flow of shielding gas. Spatter buildup can create a short circuit between the contact tip and the gas nozzle, possibly destroying the torch. Small amounts of spatter can cause poor arc starting, porosity in the weld, low quality welds and increased downtime. Spatter must be removed periodically from the gas nozzle and contact tip.
With higher currents and longer duty cycles this can become a serious problem in robotic welding applications. Shutting down a robot to clean or change consumables can be very costly.
