Gear pumps use 2 bronze gears to move the water from the inlet port to the outlet port. The newer gears are helical machined so they are quiet and long lasting and are mounted on a stainless steel shaft. The pump chamber has a by-pass port to return excess output to the cooler reservoir where it can circulate through the radiator for additional heat removal. Gear pumps take a long time to wear out and give plenty of notice when they need service. Repair kits are available to recondition gear pumps if ever necessary.
